Really, do you need more uncertainty in your life?

Love is uncertain. The weather is uncertain. Even your faithful hound seems uncertain about his devotion to you. The last thing you need in your life is a moving company that can’t guarantee you a fixed rate with certainty.

But when your movers are paid by the hour, you have absolutely no idea what your final bill will be until your move is over. By then, it’s too late to complain. The only thing that should be through the roof is your chimney – not your moving bill!

Hourly movers are very good at appearing to put a lot of sweat and muscle into your move when they’re really just drawing it out to bulk up the hours. As they load and unload boxes, navigate doorways and operate the truck’s liftgate, you think you’re hearing them toil away - but all they’re hearing is ka-ching!

Don't be taken in by these tricks of the moving trade.

Here are some ways hourly movers add to your bill without your even noticing!

  • Hauling Excess Equipment – If workers show up for your move with EXCESS equipment already on the truck, look out! That leaves less room for your things – and more trips you’ll have to pay for! They may have wardrobe boxes you can use for free – but their enormous size takes up so much room, you’ll still end up paying extra for those extra trips. We offer free wardrobe service, too, with our Move-A-Closet boxes - but you never pay more because our low flat-rate price is guaranteed!
  • "Gap Packing" a slang moving term – Their truck appears completely packed – until you look closer. Then you notice large gaps between items. All that unused space means more trips and more money out of your pocket! They’ll tell you they’re being careful about scratches – but we all know things travel better and stay protected when they’re snug.
  • "Large Loads Last" a slang moving term – A favorite practice for hourly movers is loading your small items first, which leaves your big items for last. That way, you still need them to lift your final items because they’re too heavy. If they loaded your small items last, you could just move those yourself – but your movers wouldn’t get paid for that! Loading large items last lets movers easily double your bill! Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky.
  • "Floor Loading" a slang moving term – Loading your shipment only on the floor instead of to the ceiling. Again, the truck appears packed but this time, items are only loaded on the floor level. Unless they’re stacked to the ceiling, though, your move will take more trips and – you guessed it! – more money. You end up paying your movers for driving more and working less!
  • Using Delivery Trucks... – instead of moving trucks. The most important piece of moving equipment is the truck. If a company uses a delivery truck, don’t even bother with them. Delivery trucks have small boxes, fewer doors to load from, poor equipment to protect your belongings and a dock height best suited for commercial shipping, not residential use.
  • Using Inappropriate Trucks – Hourly movers typically use cheap trucks with small boxes that were never designed for moving. They may look large - until you see them dwarfed beside our 2,200 cubic foot moving trucks. Then you see how inadequate they really are! Their 800-1,000 cubic foot size requires more trips and more money from you! If a company’s truck doesn’t have attic space above the cab, that’s the perfect clue to take a pass.
  • Excessive Liftgate Use – Liftgates look so powerful and impressive, don’t they? But unless you’re moving a 2-ton steel girder into your bedroom (and hey, if you are, we’re not being judgmental, we’re just saying), they’re overkill for residential use. Their slow up and down movement makes movers appear to be slaving away tirelessly on your move when they’re really just racking up even more billable hours.

We could go on and on about the countless ways hourly movers double and triple your final bill without you noticing! But your risk receiving an unpleasant billing surprise gets even worse when you consider … unexpected events.

Unexpected Events + Hourly Movers = Moving Disaster

Here’s just a partial list of unexpected moving events that can drive up your final bill even more when you choose a hourly mover:

  • DOT inspections
  • Frequent rests or breaks
  • Inexperienced movers
  • Narrow walkways & sharp turns
  • Rain, snow or stormy weather
  • Stairs and elevators
  • Tired movers just awaking or on their final job
  • Traffic jams
  • Weigh Stations
  • Wrong directions

It pays to choose a mover with a guaranteed fixed rate – and that's Moovers!
